Israel based technology company Water.io has developed a patented smart digital cap for bottles based on IoT technology.
It is estimated that in the USA alone, nearly 300 deaths per year are caused due to dehydration. This is caused due to unavailability of clean drinking water and even forgetting to drink enough water throughout the day. With their patented technology, Water.IO aims to allow users to stay hydrated and healthy. The smart cap technology can now be applied to bottles for drinking liquids, medicines, cosmetics and cleaning solutions.
The technology is a simple IoT based sensor:
- A small IoT sensor is fitted into the smart cap.
- This sensor is able to measure the contents in the bottle.
- The measurements are relayed through the sensor using vibrations or light emissions.
- The sensor can also be connected to a smartphone or communication hub.
- A smartphone app can communicate with the sensor, receiving information to build personalized consumer profiles.
- The data is relayed to the brands, who can provide targeted promotions and information to customers.
The Water.IO technology also includes a server platform which stores all the sensor-based data. This allows customers to receive alerts for hydration, medication or reordering of products. The servers also relay analytics and history data to brands, allowing them to increase consumer engagement directly through the mobile app.
The IoT based technology has also been expanded to smart packaging, which can extend shelf-life, safety and freshness of a product. An enhanced version of the smart cap, Water.IO simply requires the IoT sensor to be embedded in the product packaging. This can then be used to monitor product levels, ensure the integrity and increase consumer engagement.
The smart packaging technology from Water.io has been used in the following applications:
- Hydration Reminders: a reminder mechanism based on vibrations and sounds.
- Water Health: suggests nutritional additives based on the user's personal profile.
- Hydration App: creates a daily hydration monitor for consumers.
Water.IO allows brands to add tracking information to the sensor, increasing the traceability of a product. Additionally, consumers can use the technology to order refills of products when required.
The patented technology has been used in partnership with Danone, Font Vella, Bayer and Nolato among others.
