Protective packaging is critical to ensure the safe and secure transport of goods. However, there are trade-offs in terms of environmental and economic performance. The use of protective packaging is growing with the rise of e-commerce, amplifying the challenges of providing a good protection while avoiding the use of excessive quantity of materials as well as the use of unsustainable/hard to recycle ones. More now than ever, end consumers directly see protective packaging and often feel inconvenienced when products are damaged, or when they must dispose of packaging material.
The challenge is to perform well in terms of both protection and sustainability.
The Design Challenge aims at identifying innovations in protective packaging materials and systems that embody excellence in the following sustainable packaging pillars:
Maximum points will be awarded to innovations that perform well across multiple sustainable packaging pillars. The applicants need to have at least prototypes in market testing-phase.

Challenge Judges include experts from the SPC, Closed Loop Partners and academia. This year’s Challenge will also feature a group of Advisors who represent the end-users of protective packaging from key sectors, including Amazon Packaging Lab, West Elm, Lowe's, Wayfair and RILA.
