Founded in 2013, Plastic Bank® is empowering the regenerative society. Plastic Bank is helping the world stop ocean plastic while improving the lives of collector communities. The company builds ethical recycling ecosystems in coastal communities and reprocesses the materials for reintroduction into the global manufacturing supply chain. Collectors receive a premium for the materials they collect which helps them provide basic family necessities such as groceries, cooking fuel, school tuition, and health insurance. Plastic Bank’s proprietary blockchain platform secures the entire transaction and provides real-time data visualization – allowing for transparency, traceability, and rapid scalability. The collected material is reborn as Social Plastic® which can be easily reintegrated into products and packaging as part of a closed-loop supply chain. Plastic Bank currently operates in Haiti, Brazil, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Egypt.
Plastic Bank’s goal is an authentic, completely circular plastic supply chain, including Consumer to Business return of plastic into the sourcing and manufacturing phases. The result is economic development in regions where it has a tremendous impact. All while delivering profit and value to all stakeholders.
Plastic Bank has opened over 320 collection branches in 5 countries. Our recycling ecosystems have successfully collected over 13 million kgs of plastic (over 650 million plastic bottles), and engaged over 20,000 collectors globally, providing opportunities to improve their lives. Plastic Bank is increasing momentum and is now collecting 1 million kgs of plastic per month across our recycling ecosystems.
Plastic Bank has been named on Corporate Knights’ Green 50: Top Business Moves that Helped the Planet in 2020. The company has received numerous awards, including the 2019 Game Changer of the Year award from the Greentech Festival, the UN Momentum for Change Award at COP23, the prestigious Sustainia Community Award at COP21, the RCBC innovation award, and the IBM Beacon Award.
