The Philippines based Pacific Paint (Boysen) Inc has developed KNOxOUT, a range of photocatalytic paint that can act as air purifiers by breaking down harmful compounds into non-toxic constituents.
KNOxOUT works on CristalACTiV™ photocatalytic technology and contains Titanium Dioxide as a light-activated catalyst. Titanium Dioxide when activated by light in the presence of oxygen and water vapor, can breakdown pollutants like NOx compounds into harmless substances.
The catalyst in the paint converts NOx compounds into Nitric Acid. Alkaline Calcium Carbonate compounds in the paint then neutralizes the acid to produce nitrate, water and negligible amounts of CO2.
KNOxOUT paint offers a number of benefits, as it is:
- Antibacterial
- Deodorizing
- Lead and Mercury-free
- Low VOC count
- Low maintenance
- Easy Application
- Quick Drying
The paint was initially tested by painting a Metro Rail Station in Manila. It was observed that 1 sq meter of a wall painted by KNOxOUT can eliminate up to 160 gms of NOx each year. A second test at King's College in London confirmed the results of the test, making the air purifying ability of KNOxOUT equal to that of a mature tree.
The paint is suitable for use in tunnels, bus stops, vehicle parking and entrances to major buildings.
The paint is also suitable for indoor use and has been used in a hospital in Mexico City.
Boysen aims to ship KNOxOUT to companies and agencies around the world.
Pacific Paint (Boysen) Inc. was awarded the Sustainable Company of the Year in 2018 at the Global Responsible Business Leadership Award.
