GRIM helps reduce vegetable and fruit waste by sourcing and reselling 100% organic fresh produce that is discarded by farmers and supermarkets for being too ugly.
More than a third of the fresh, seasonal vegetables and fruits grown worldwide are discarded for not matching the beauty standards of supermarkets and consumers, though they are fresh, of good quality and great to taste. These ugly fruits and vegetables might be misshapen, too ripe, too big, too small, with scratches, a little soft or wrongly coloured. This needless waste ends up in landfills or is sold cheaply by farmers, and is denied its rightful price. Additionally, farmers are forced to grow more crops to meet their delivery commitments to supermarkets, resulting in a waste of precious natural resources like water, fresh seeds, soil, etc.
GRIM puts quality over beauty standards set by consumers and supermarkets, by sourcing the ugly vegetables and fruits discarded and repackaging them for sale to other customers. As a result, farmers get more income for their produce, while customers enjoy fresh, healthy, organic produce that is delicious.
The organic vegetables are offered on a subscription basis to customers and food businesses, by volunteers, who take care of the sourcing, repacking and selling. The wooden boxes used to deliver the produce are also reused and recycled, making the whole exercise environment friendly and sustainable. GRIM also offers tasty recipes to use the ugly produce via newsletters.
By reducing the amount of organic waste that ends up in landfills, and making better usage of the existing crop of vegetables and fruits, GRIM helps save precious natural resources. As of March 2020, GRIM has saved up to 145 tons of food, generated more than 214.000€ income for farmers, and reduced CO2 production by 275 tons.
GRIM presently operates in Denmark and offers different subscription boxes, and their pricing depends on the subscription method opted for and the delivery location.
Families, restaurants, and other food-based businesses, that need healthy and organic vegetables, are potential customers for GRIM.
