Ecolomondo, a publicly-traded company on the TSX-V is commercializing pyrolytic technology to produce marketable recycled resources from hydrocarbon waste.
Hydrocarbon waste, including scrap tires among the sources, makes up one-third of the waste in landfills. However, hydrocarbon waste is a valuable feedstock for extracting essential commodities through pyrolysis, the thermal decomposition of materials. Ecolomondo aims to commercialize this process.
The technology used, named Thermal Decomposition Process (TDP), works in a few simple steps:
- The waste feedstock is passed through a Thermal Reactor.
- The gaseous hydrocarbons emitted are processed in a condenser.
- The mixture then goes through an oil/gas separator.
- This leaves gas, oil and solids in the end.
The end products of this process if scrap tires are used as a feedstock are oil, gas, carbon black and steel. The gas generated in the process is recycled to power the thermal reactor. The TDP technology is simple, reliable, sustainable and profitable. Although Ecolomondo is currently focusing on developing a plant for scrap tires, the process can be carried out using other feedstock products, like automobile residue, diapers, asphalt roof shingles and non recyclable plastic waste.
Ecolomondo has developed a pilot plant in Quebec, Canada, with two reactors, each able to process 6.5 tons of waste in 8 hours.
The company is now establishing a second processing plant in Ontario, Canada.
