Braven provides a technology to recycle plastic waste into fuel and feedstock using pyrolysis methods. Braven is a brand of Golden Renewable Energy, LLC.
Out of the total 6.3 billion tons of plastic waste estimated in the world, 79% is in landfills or the natural environment. There is a need for a scalable solution to divert plastic waste away from the environment.
The company uses thermal depolymerization, a type of pyrolysis technology. It heats plastic waste to break down long hydrocarbon chains present in plastics into shorter polymer chains characteristic of hydrocarbon fuels. The methods involves vaporizing and condensing plastics.
Braven’s patented method produces feedstock that can be used to make plastic products or fuel such as diesel.
The system accepts all types of post-consumer, post-industrial and post-recycled plastics including films and bags. It uses post-processed municipal solid waste that are not recyclable and would otherwise be sent to landfills.
The plastic waste it shredded and then heated to up to 1,300 degrees Fahrenheit (or 700 degrees Celsius).
The diesel produced from the company’s system is comparable to ASTMD396, a fuel used in home heating or in industrial uses. It can be blended with conventional ASTMD396 fuel and sold at pricing according to New York Mercantile Exchange rates.
The company provides a modular solution that can be used at the source of wastes. This reduces transportation costs.
It is operating a commercial facility in North Carolina, USA, and is developing more facilities in the USA and other countries. It is looking to provide its technology to clients and can have plants set up in less than a year. It also aims to increase production at its existing units.
In 2018, Golden Renewable Energy, LLC raised funding from Fortistar Capital, LLC.
