BLOOM is a plant-based performance-driven foam formulated with algae biomass. The technology has been developed by ALGIX - an Eco-innovation company headquartered in Meridian, Mississippi, USA.
BLOOM products are made with algae biomass used to clean the environment. Algae absorb air and water pollution, like CO2, nitrogen, and phosphorus that create risks for uncontrolled algae blooms in nature. BLOOM’s parent company, ALGIX, has developed technology and partnerships for environmental remediation, algae production, harvesting and processing of the algae biomass into thermoplastic compounds for consumer and commercial grade products.
The process for harvesting algae starts with separating algae cells from water using dissolved air flotation or clarification. The algae laden water is filtered and the clean water is returned to the environment containing significantly fewer pollutants, thereby lowering the risk of ongoing algae blooms. The concentrated algae slurry is then further dewatered using mechanical filtration or centrifugal forces, then dried to produce a dry algae flake or granule. The algae supply chain is focused on algae producers operating at lakes, water treatment facilities, and industrial facilities to clean air and water and create a new renewable feedstock for plastics and foams.
BLOOM uses an eco-impact calculator to determine a brand's individual product impact on the environment. They have worked with footwear and fashion brands like Adidas, Billabong, Toms, Vivo Barefoot, and Clarks.
BLOOM has multiple manufacturing partners located in China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, and India.
