Similarly to single-use plastic shopping bags, single-use plastic garbage bags are one of the greatest polluters on Earth - they exacerbate climate change, threaten wildlife and impact humans health. It is estimated that globally households use 425+ billion single-use plastic garbage bags every single year. This number excludes garbage bags disposed of by commercial and industrial sectors. The most commonly used alternatives - compostable and biodegradable garbage bags - are not a truly eco-friendly solution. Both types of bioplastics require special conditions in order to degrade that are not met when in landfill (including temperatures over 50C for biodegradables). Compostable bags can’t decompose in landfill either as they require home compost or a special industrial composting facility. When in landfill compostable bags release methane - a greenhouse gas at least 28 times more potent than CO2.
TOMbag is an Australian social enterprise on a mission to rid the world of single-use garbage bags with their sustainable and reusable alternatives. They’ve created a reusable garbage bag which is extremely durable, easily washable and 100% waterproof. Their reusable solution is fully circular - they create all their products from post-consumer waste using GRS certified recycled plastic and offer an opportunity to upcycle their products at the end of their life making sure that nothing goes to waste.
TOMbag was selected as a finalist in the HATCH: Taronga Accelerator Program 2020. TOMbag is also part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation community.
TOMbag reusable garbage bags are available in three sizes - small (12-20L), large (30-40L), and x-large (120L). The products can be ordered online and are shipped worldwide. TOMbag products can be used by both individuals and businesses such as hotels & resorts, facility management firms, cleaning companies, F&B, etc. Wholesale is available.
