Recycling Solutions
Case Study: Recycling Technologies Landscape
Client: Leading Global Food MNC
The Context & Challenge:
- Companies around the world have pledged to fight against plastic pollution by making packaging more recyclable, using more recycled materials, and preventing waste. As a result, the demand for recycled materials has grown exponentially as organizations seek to honor their commitments.
Even though a new wave of innovations in new materials, packaging designs, recycling technologies and recovery systems has emerged, the availability of high-quality recycled plastic for packaging is constrained by lack of collection systems, unfavorable economics, and technological constraints. - One of the world’s largest food and beverage companies invited Ubuntooto landscape the existing technologies and their respective limitations across the distinct stages of the recycling productive chain against several sorts of plastic: food grade PET, packaging grade polyolefins, food grade polyolefins, and multi-layered packaging.
The Deliverable:
- According to the landscape exercise, demand for recycled plastics, especially food-grade polyolefins will outstrip supply in the short to medium term, requiring companies to secure supplies through strategic partnerships and long-term procurement contracts to meet public commitments. Moreover, investments by large players in mechanical recycling and solvent / enzymatic depolymerization technologies are expected to reduce the supply gap in recycled food-grade PET. However, the supply of high-quality recycled Polyolefins (PO) was projected to remain constrained due to inherent challenges in the materials and the limited supply of quality feedstock.
- Ubuntoo evaluated current technologies, and mapped, vetted, and shortlisted emerging technologies, start-ups, and processes. We identified and evaluated over 120 technologies, obtained reviews from 5 industry leading experts, and facilitated multiple learning sessions with the client.
The Result:
- As a result, Ubuntoo’s client successfully partnered with two of the vetted technologies to convert waste polyolefins into food grade recycled material for their packaging, and to convert mixed municipal waste into pallets for logistics.
