The bioplastic industry is growing steadily such that market experts predict global bioplastic production capacity will increase from approximately 2.05 million tons globally in 2017 to approximately 2.44 million tons in 2022. In theory, bioplastics could replace any disposable item currently made from plastic, be it cutlery, packaging, or straws. 

There is currently a wide range of bioplastics with specific end-of-life options for each variety. Bio-based plastics can be compostable, recyclable, or "biodegradable," but some break down almost as slowly as traditional plastics. Understanding which bio-based material is best for your product can be confusing.
This Greenhouse aims to: 

  • Provide information about the available bioplastic solutions or those under development
  • Leverage the market knowledge (legislation, news of the industry, market evolution, etc.) to deepen the understanding of the viability of sustainable bioplastics
  • Facilitate exchanges and connection among members of the Greenhouse, all of whom have a common interest in reducing unsustainable plastics from our value chains and ecosystems
