Carbon Capture Technologies
Case Study: Carbon Capture and Utilization Solution Mapping
Client: Leading European Multi-National Company
The Context & Challenge:
  • The client had committed to becoming a net-zero company by 2030, but despite its effort to reduce emissions, a substantial part of the carbon footprint was outside the client’s control. Therefore, the project objective was to map, assess, and shortlist investable Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) solutions that could potentially reduce the stock of excess CO2 in the atmosphere preferably in a way that was fully incorporated into the client’s value chain.
The Deliverable:
  • Ubuntoo identified over 70 technology-based solutions in the Carbon Capture, Direct Air Capture, and Carbon Utilization space. Furthermore, we created a scoring framework based on client-specific parameters, to assess the solutions across two dimensions, the potential climate benefit, and the strategic role of this solution in the company value chain.
  • For the climate benefit, Ubuntoo relied on available scientific information regarding potential negative emissions impact, storage permanence based on primary CO2 use, and CO2 binding capacity (kg CO2 stored/kg of product). To assess the strategic benefit, our framework scored the solutions based on their stage of development using the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) and a qualitative assessment for the value chain fit.
  • Based on these scores, Ubuntoo categorized the solutions into a portfolio that showcased opportunities as long-term risk investment, investment and development partnership, commercial and strategic partnership, and scaled carbon neutralization.
The Result:
  • As a result of this project, the client was able to shortlist several providers to begin preliminary conversations for pilots and scale up opportunities. This model can be replicated and modified for other use cases in the environmental sector, and we hope to help other clients who are investing in sustainable technologies make the right decision for both planet and profit.
