Can Plastic Be Composted?

There are a number of new brands of eco-friendly products out there, many with labels we are unsure about. Are some of those terms just there to confuse us into purchasing a product we believe is better but really isn't?  Plastics can be created out of starches, fuel, corn, and 100s of other bio-based products, and each will break down differently. What is PLA?  What is PET?  How do these plastics break down?  If a plastic cup says compostable does this mean you can compost it in your back yard?  Can these #7 plastics be recycled?

This 4:57 minute video from the American Chemical Society breaks down how some of these new plastics can be composted and the type of compost environment necessary to achieve such processes.
