What does it mean to live a "zero waste life" exactly? Going day to day do we truthfully realize how wasteful we are? Just think about grabbing a piece of gum, the wrapper around the piece to protect it from contamination, then chewing this gum, what do you do when you are done enjoying the piece of gum? Naturally you spit the gum in a garbage, the grass, or out the window. This small concept of wasteful behavior is what Lauren Singer discusses in her TEDxTeen talk.
"...my boyfriend at the time was brushing his teeth with baking soda, and I thought gross...I could never do that..."
-Lauren Singer, TEDxTeen talk
Lauren discusses her journey as an environmental student, a life realization that lead her to a large life change, a zero waste life. Lauren has been transitioning and living a zero waste lifestyle for the past three years (this video dates May 27.2015). She talks about what she noticed about her life prior to the lifestyle, the research she conducted in creating this lifestyle change, and the products she choose to make the switch. In making her transition Lauren looked at what was her trash, what are the solutions or alternatives to her waste/trash? DIY, reusing unusual products, to taking care of her products until the very end, Lauren tries it all.
"Lauren is an Environmental Studies graduate from NYU and former Sustainability Manager at the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, and the amount of trash that she has produced over the past three years can fit inside of a 16 oz. mason jar." -as stated from TED talk
