Case Study: Automotive End-of-life
Client: Leading automotive marketplace
The Context & Challenge:
  • End of Life Vehicles (ELVs) represent a significant waste stream due to their volume and material content, posing environmental hazards when not managed properly. The global proliferation of vehicles has led to a surge in ELV numbers, driving the need for improved waste management. While some regions have enacted regulations to address ELV disposal, many developing countries lack clear rules or plans for handling this growing issue.
  • A fast-growing network of trading platforms operating globally in the consumer-to-consumer model wanted to address the challenges of reducing the environmental impact of automobiles, trucks, and motorbikes after they have completed their useful life and are discarded.
  • Ubuntoo was invited to explore environmentally friendly business opportunities in ELVs and provide a comprehensive review of the value chain of automotive waste with a geographical focus on India & Southeast Asia.
The Deliverable:
  • Ubuntoo’s landscape exercise was centered on value chains and valuation gaps, policy frameworks, stakeholders’ and competitors’ analysis, barriers and opportunities, and conceptual differences within selected markets. The research found that most ELV markets in the selected countries are informal, with capacity limits, consumer awareness gaps, and sourcing challenges. The project also analyzed environmental trends and waste issues and performed stakeholder outreach to capture business insights.
  • In summary, Ubuntoo assessed barriers and opportunities in the automotive waste value chain, including regulatory deficits, and market dynamics, and identified potential partnerships for environmental and legal compliance, offering the client pilot opportunities for CSR commitment and scalable business models.
The Result:
  • As a result, Ubuntoo’s client partnered with one of the vetted companies to pilot a business setup to salvage and reuse a maximum number of components from end-of-life vehicles.
